“Open heart - clear horizon” Old Frisian seafarer motto. An expression of their cosmopolitan outlook, but also their faith in and hope for a safe sea voyage.
Born in the stormy North Sea. Formed and wave-swept by storm surges that have ceaselessly gnawed on it. Wandering dunes, enormous piles of sand, driven forward by the steady wind over the island, roads and pathways. Busily multiplying rabbits enjoying the vast Heathland. Many things that creep and fly have found a home in the mudflats rich in species. The frothy sea lines kilometer upon kilometer of fine sand beaches.
This is where you can enjoy homegrown mussels and explore natural reserves by e-bike (naturally with a seemingly ever-present headwind). Where organic farmers challenge our Swiss cheese culture with their lovingly handcrafted cheeses and true Frisians stand up to the steadily progressing gentrification. Once more, we are traveling to this part of the world we have become so fond of, full of wind, weather and incredibly expensive cashmere sweaters.
All that is Sylt. Germany’s northernmost island.
The bio-fragility, originality and the tangible climate of this island and its history encourage us to open up to an eco-friendly building and living culture that embraces its natural surroundings. That’s what makes true luxury, because it’s also about creating responsible living spaces in this place by authentically combining function and form with the local environment.
A thought that we want to keep in mind and apply throughout our research here for our interior design projects.
